September event programme at EKKM

The last exhibition of the EKKM season opens on 4 October. The period between the exhibitions in September will bring a series of events and a showcase gallery programme.

The exhibition spaces of the Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia will be closed for almost five weeks in preparation for the large-scale, site-specific solo exhibition of Ene-Liis Semper. Semper’s last solo exhibition was at the Kumu Art Museum in 2011. This year’s exhibition will present the artist’s new works as a holistic space, created specifically for EKKM.

During the long installation period, however, EKKM will host a variety of public programmes and events.

On 2 September, the first of a series exhibitions will open in the showcase attached to the EKKM facade. The showcase gallery was established in 2018 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Estonian Academy of Arts’ Department of Photography – historically, many of EKA’s photography students have contributed a lot to the creation of EKKM. Later on, the programme of the showcase gallery has also been curated by the Graphic Design Department of EKA. Throughout September, EKKM’s hosts will invite visitors to encounter art on the facade of the building, where the wall itself becomes a witness to chance-encounters, exchanges and building communities. For three interventions in the showcase gallery, works will be presented by artists Martin Kirsiste, Loora Kaubi, Katariina Kesküla and Juuli Teder who are also the hosts in EKKM’s reception/bar. The openings will take place on 2, 11 and 20 September at 18:00.

The first exhibition “Leaven” is by Martin Kirsiste.
Information about next EKKM vitrine exhibitions coming soon.

On September 10, as part of the first showcase exhibition there will be a craft evening in the EKKM bar, where all craft enthusiasts are welcome. The evening aims to focus on slowing down and appreciating the role of craft in everyday life, both in the context of contemporary art practices and beyond.

On the first weekend of autumn, 6-7 September, the EKKM exhibition space will temporarily transform into a club setting – a two-day event nv @ EKKM will take place as part of the music programme. Featuring: Valge Tüdruk (live), dj hydra & dj poetry, Kersten Kõrge, Moenarr, Celestica, Looking current, Glenwashere, Druz, HOSTILE, Laurel 2, White Gloss, + more.
TICKETS: €10 (1 night), €15 (2 nights). The doors will open at 21:00 and the performers will start at 22:00.

On 15 September, from 14-18, in EKKM garden, there will be a market fair dedicated to the best hits of personal closets, art, design and publications. During the day, local DJs will play music, there will be house tours of EKKM’s premises, face painting for children young and old, and much more. The market fair will end with a charity auction, organised by the artist initiative Community in EKA for Palestine, and all vendors participating in the fair will be asked to donate an item to be included in the auction. Bringing together friends, colleagues and new guests of EKKM for an afternoon of fun, the fair will provide a platform for artists to sell their work and raise money for charity. The bar will be open, and food will be available, too. FB event: https://forms.gle/RiewF99myx9PueM37

On the same day, in the evening of 15 October, EKKM will host a concert by Finnish band Yam Ha. The band led by Jussi Kivi on drums and Juuso Paaso on guitar, will be mixing Sahara Tuareg-inspired rhythms with underground rock and free improvisation. Visual artist and musician Jussi Kivi started playing the drums in the 1970s, influenced by prog and jazz, and returned to music after decades as a visual artist, during which his work has also been shown at EKKM (2019). Juuso Paaso is a guitarist and writer who has been involved in both underground music and DIY rock. The concert is free.

On 18 September, the monthly quiz night VIKTORIINA will take place in the EKKM bar. This time the quiz will be hosted by Kadi Kesküla, EKKM’s manager, and will include spicy questions about cultural politics! Pre-registration required: https://forms.gle/Q4rTPF3wnkYYo88w9

On 26 September, a series of reading group events in English will be launched, organised in collaboration with Tallinn-based Scottish artists Jake Shepherd and Yvette Bathgate. The Reading group will focus on (art) theoretical texts and seeks to create a link between the EKKM community and foreign artists living, working and studying in Estonia.

Although we are preparing a new exhibition for the whole month of September and the doors are mostly closed, we are still doing introductory visits to the students of EKA or other schools!

In the evening of 4 October at 18:00 we will open a solo exhibition by Ene-Liis Semper.

Welcome to EKKM!
